1st Black university student at College of Alabama dies soon after acquiring faculty recognition

Autherine Lucy Foster, whose very last name was then Lucy, created background in 1956 when she enrolled as the university’s initially Black pupil. She was the 1st Black person to go to an all-White faculty or college in the state.

“Whilst we mourn the decline of a legend who embodied love, integrity and a spirit of resolve, we are comforted by recognizing her legacy will continue at The University of Alabama and beyond,” UA President Stuart R. Bell claimed in a assertion.

Bell claimed Foster “will often be remembered as one who broke barriers, reminded us of the respect due to each individual individual and lived a lifetime of strength in steadfast service to her students and community.”

The civil rights activist and training chief was expelled from university just after her third working day of classes, adhering to a violent mob that surrounded the making that now bears her name. At the time, she took shelter in the University of Education and learning Library soon after college officials served her escape.

Decades afterwards, Foster enrolled at the university’s Faculty of Education in 1989 and gained her master’s degree in schooling in 1991.

She had an endowed scholarship named after her by the university, which is supplied to a Black undergraduate university student yearly. A clock tower was focused to her in 2010. In 2019, Foster received an honorary doctorate from the College of Alabama.
